When Pegasus Flight School first heard about Pipistrel’s Alpha Trainer, it seemed too good to be true. The idea of acquiring a new airplane with low investment and operating costs, complete with advanced avionics and exceptional fuel efficiency, was almost unbelievable.

But after thorough research and consultation with other flight schools, Pegasus Flight School discovered the Alpha Trainer was indeed the real deal. This strategic investment has since proven to be a game-changer for the school, contributing significantly to its growth and success.

Building a legacy

Since its inception in 2015, Pegasus Flight School has experienced remarkable growth and transformation. From humble beginnings with just three airplanes and three instructors, the school has expanded to boast a fleet of 12 airplanes and an equal number of instructors. Based in McGregor, Texas, and surrounded by the larger Waco area, Pegasus Flight School says it has become the largest Part 61 flight school in the region. The school’s commitment to providing the best possible flight training is encapsulated in its motto, “fly the difference,” and is evident in every aspect of its operations.

“We have a culture with our instructors that we’re here to help the student, no matter what. We’re here for them,” Operations Manager Michael Ruiz said.

Michael attributes much of the school’s recent success to the strategic investment in Pipistrel’s Alpha Trainer aircraft. According to Michael, the decision to incorporate the Alpha Trainer into the fleet was driven by a combination of factors, including cost-effectiveness, advanced avionics and fuel efficiency.

Cost-effectiveness and advanced avionics

Initially, the attractive price of the Alpha Trainer caught the attention of Pegasus Flight School.

“When we heard that we could get a brand-new airplane for that price with all those avionics, we thought it was too good to be true,” Michael recalls.

After consulting with several other flight schools that had already integrated the Alpha Trainer into their fleets, it became clear the aircraft was not only affordable but also modern which has been attractive for students.

For training, the avionics are the best thing. Students really liked the avionics. They like how well it flies. It’s all there. Michael Ruiz, Pegasus Flight School Operations Manager

The Alpha Trainer’s advanced avionics were another significant draw. Students and instructors appreciate the modern technology and the full glass cockpit, which provided a comprehensive and intuitive flying experience. This technological edge has enhanced the training process, making it more effective and enjoyable for students.

Fuel efficiency and operational savings

One of the most compelling reasons for choosing the Alpha Trainer was its exceptional fuel efficiency. Ruiz said he called other flight schools before making the investment and they all said the same thing.

“One flight school said their cash flow has changed significantly because they’re spending so much less on fuel that they’re able to buy more airplanes,” Ruiz explains.

He added at Pegasus, they’ve experienced the aircraft expending about 30% of the fuel consumed by other planes in their fleet. This dramatic reduction in fuel consumption has had a profound impact on the school’s operational costs.

“If I had to say one thing that made us choose an Alpha Trainer, it would be the fuel savings,” he said.

Positive student and instructor feedback

The response from both students and instructors has been overwhelmingly positive. Students appreciate the modern avionics and the smooth flying experience, while more experienced pilots enjoy the challenge of mastering the stick and rudder controls.

“They feel like they’re really aviators,” Ruiz says.

He also added the experience is only heightened by Pipistrel’s customer service. From prompt support for mechanics to addressing any concerns, he said Pipistrel has consistently delivered on its promises.

I honestly thought it was too good to be true, but everything that was promised about this aircraft and Pipistrel in general has come to fruition. Michael Ruiz, Pegasus Flight School Operations Manager

A bright future with the Alpha Trainer

Ruiz said the investment in Pipistrel’s Alpha Trainer has proven to be one of the best decisions for Pegasus Flight School. The combination of cost-effectiveness, advanced avionics, fuel efficiency and outstanding customer service has positioned the school for continued growth and success.

“This is the best investment we’ve had in a long time. I think this is the future of aviation.”

With the Alpha Trainer, Pegasus Flight School is not only flying the difference but also leading the way in innovative and efficient flight training.
